"We have discovered that the language of publication has a dramatic and largely underestimated effect on citation-based ranking of universities. In applying a set of standard bibliometric indicators to rank 500 universities worldwide by their research performance for the 2010 Leiden Ranking , we have discovered that the language of publication has a dramatic and largely underestimated effect on citation-based measurement of research performance. In our ranking site we show the difference between the ranking of the World 500 on the basis of all Web of Science (WoS) publications and on the basis of only-English WoS publications.
