Seminar "More languages, more opportunities"

Mis à jour : 21 Jui 2010

Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning and the municipality of Leeuwarden hosted a seminar on the project “More languages, more opportunities: A Papiamentu – Dutch language development project”. The seminar took place on 7 April 2010, in the town hall of Leeuwarden.

Project leader and researcher Nienke Boomstra MSc gave insight in the (theoretical) background of the project and explained the connection between theory and practice in this project. Key note speaker Prof. dr. Van San. presented research concerning the influence of Antillean mothers on the (criminal) development of their children. A language coach and a participating mother from Leeuwarden spoke about their first experiences within the project “More languages, more opportunities”. A short video illustrated the practices of a language coach during a home visit, and showed how the bilingual materials were used.

There was some scepticism from the audience whether the project would work in Antillean multi-problem families as well. Location coordinator of the project in Rotterdam, Mrs. Jeane Parker, spoke in a gripping way about the positive experiences with just those difficult to reach families. Finally, the website adapted to the project was launched.
